Apple to expand the iPhone’s NFC functionality?

“Apple could be set to expand the iPhone’s NFC chip reading capabilities to allow it to be used to read data stored in security chips like those used in passports, comments made by the UK government suggest. The UK Home Office has been in talks with Apple to find a way to extend availability of its EU Exit app, currently only available on Android phones, to make it possible for EU citizens living in the UK to also use an iPhone to register for Settled Status with the app.”

Motiv is bringing NFC-based payments to its fitness ring

Announced way back at CES 2016, Motiv’s fitness ring was surprisingly capable and accurate for its tiny form factor. Earlier this year, the startup promised to bring even more functionality to the finger, starting with biometric authentication that uses a wearer’s gait to unlock devices. This year at the show, the company’s got a handful of additional new features to showoff. Most interesting among them is upcoming addition of mobile payments, via NFC. “

Google includes support for FeliCa NFC payments in Pixel 3 smartphones

“Google has extended the NFC capabilities of its Pixel smartphones with the addition of support for ‘NFC-F’ FeliCa NFC mobile payments in Japanese versions of its new Pixel 3 smartphones. This is the first time that Google has made a Pixel smartphone available in Japan but Android users in the country have been able to make Google Pay NFC payments with compatible smartphones since December 2016. “

IDEMIA and JCB Partner to Launch Google Pay in Japan

“IDEMIA, the global leader in Augmented Identity, today announces its partnership with JCB, the only international payment brand based in Japan, to launch Google Pay in Japan. Users will be able to make contactless mobile payments in store using their JCB branded credit, debit, and prepaid cards enrolled in their Google Pay, at places such as convenience stores, supermarkets, drug stores and other shops where QUICPay is accepted.”

Shipments of NFC-ready POS Terminals Reached 24.7 Million In 2017

“According to a new research report from specialist IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the market for NFC-ready POS terminals continued to show strong momentum in 2017 with annual shipments reaching an estimated 24.7 million units worldwide. The attach rate for NFC was highest in EU28+2 and North America, where 90 percent and 88 percent respectively of the POS terminals shipped featured NFC.”

Apple Wants To Use The Technology Behind Wireless Payments To Let You Open Your Door

“Apple plans to open up the technology it uses for wireless payments so that it can be applied to other applications. In fact, at the company’s Cupertino, California campus, employees can already swipe into the office using their iPhones to unlock doors, reports The Information(paywall). Apple is expected to announce the development next month. The technology is known as near-field communication (NFC), a method of transferring data wirelessly between nearby devices without an internet connection. NFC chips in iPhones (and billions of other handsets) can securely transmit all kinds of information, ranging from complex things like financial transactions and identity checks to small bits of data that trigger things like unlocking doors and drawers.”

Octopus App for Business Now Enables All Octopus Users to Pay on Merchant Mobile Devices

“Octopus Cards Limited today launched a new feature to enhance the Octopus App for Business, allowing merchants to accept Octopus card payment through their NFC mobile devices. Users of all Octopus cards and products (including Smart Octopus in Samsung Pay) can simply tap on the merchants’ NFC mobile devices – which can now serve as Octopus readers for easy payments. In collaboration with the Coalition of Hong Kong Newspaper and Magazine Merchants, the new feature will be introduced in the coming months to around 400 newspaper stalls in Hong Kong, commencing in Mong Kok. Existing Octopus App for Business merchants, as well as other businesses and trades in the city can also make use of this new feature for broader consumer coverage.”

Crédit Agricole’s Paylib contactless mobile payment service, based on dejamobile’s HCE Solution, is now accessible to Visa card holders

“French bank Crédit Agricole’s is extending its HCE (Host Card Emulation) based mobile payment service to Visa holders. Only available to Mastercard card holders so far, the bank MaCarte application and Paylib, the French interbank payment brand, will now allow Visa card holders to use their smartphones to pay instore. Crédit Agricole is the first bank in France to offer a mobile payment service based on HCE and covering both Visa and Mastercard cards.”

Google pay app Tez to add ‘tap n pay’ option

“Users of Google’s Tez will soon be able to load their cards and enable ‘tap and pay’ in the payments app. The internet giant also plans to make Tez payments available for other Google products as well, which means that users in future will be able to make payments through email and see shops accepting Tez on Google Maps.”
