Apple Would Have to Share Payment Tech Under Rules Mulled by EU

Bloomberg (paywall)

“The European Union is considering new rules that would likely require Apple Inc. to give competitors access to payments technology inside its iPhones. The new laws would prevent mobile device manufacturers from limiting access to near-field communication technology embedded in smartphones and other devices such as smartwatches, according to documents obtained by Bloomberg. NFC technology handles wireless signals that allow users to pay via their devices at store terminals, rather than a credit or debit card. While the report did not mention Apple by name, at present iPhone and Apple Watch users can only make NFC payments using Apple Pay. Banks and other competitors have complained they want the same functionality for their own iPhone apps and that Apple won’t give them access to the chip.”

Apple Announces Support for Apple Pay NFC Stickers, Partners With Bird Scooters and More

9to5Mac

“Right now, physical Apple Pay transactions require bulky terminals like those you find at retail store checkouts. With the new support, an iPhone will know how to read a specially-encoded NFC tag (that can be as inert as a sticker) and automatically show the Apple Pay purchase interface when a user holds their device near it. No third-party apps or other set up required. The obvious example is a user can ad-hoc top up their miles on a hired electric scooter simply by tapping their phone or watch to a NFC sticker on the bike. For Bonobos, it will enable simpler self-service shopping with the ability to place NFC tags directly onto clothing rails. The new Apple Pay features will be rolling out later this year, presumably with more partners onboard now that the news is public. This is yet another step towards Apple’s goal of replacing the wallet.”

Apple also announced that inside the Wallet app, users will soon be able to sign up for loyalty cards in one tap, presumably presented to users as recommendations when they make eligible purchases.”

The NFC Forum’s Latest Spec Is Aimed Squarely at QR Codes

Digital Transactions

“Backers of near-field communication technology for mobile payments made it plain on Tuesday they’re ready to fight back against quick-response codes, a rival technology that has won support not only from giant systems like China’s Alipay and WeChat Pay but also domestically from merchant apps from big chains like Walmart Inc. and Kohls Corp. The NFC Forum, a Wakefield, Mass.-based standards body, released what it calls a “candidate” spec aimed at making mobile transactions even easier than with QR codes. The Money Transfer Candidate specification’s method would apply to both person-to-person and consumer-to-merchant transactions, and now awaits industry review and comment.”

NFC Forum bridges the gap between QR mobile payments services and NFC devices

NFC World

“NMT “enables the transfer of money either between two persons or between a person and a merchant,” STMicroelectronics’ Daniel Orsatti adds. “The idea is to have a very simple way to do it by just using an app. “The starting point was to define an NFC solution able to replace existing QR code solutions in Asia which require additional actions from the user to pre-select the right payment app and then to activate and place the camera in the correct position.”
