Starbucks to Update Loyalty Program and App This Fall to Offer More Ways to Pay and Earn Stars

“Today, Starbucks announced plans to update its industry-leading Starbucks® Rewards™ loyalty program by giving members more payment options and ways to earn Stars through the Starbucks app. Beginning this fall in company-operated stores in the U.S. and Canada, Starbucks Rewards members will also be able to scan their app and then pay with cash, credit/debit cards, or select mobile wallets and earn Stars toward free items. Members will also be able to save these payment methods directly in the Starbucks app to earn stars when paying. These enhancements will be in addition to the current option of earnings Stars by paying with a Starbucks Card in stores and within the app.”

They cite the cash that the coffee chain has brought in as the main reason for their competitive concerns. Starbucks Japan Launching Contactless Pen With Payments Technology

“Starbucks Coffee Japan Co. is launching a mobile payment product called Starbucks TouchThe Pen, a ballpoint pen with embedded contactless payment technology, according to a company press release.  The pen, developed in cooperation with Zebra Corp., uses dark brown water resistant gel ink, inspired by Starbucks Coffee. It’s based on FeliCa contactless payment chips from Sony Corp., which originally launched in 2015, and lead to earlier product releases, including keychains and iPhone cases.”

“Bixby allows My Starbucks Rewards™ customers in South Korea to place an order and pay through voice recognition “on command.” The feature allows customers to speak just as if they were talking to a barista in-store, including modifying their beverage to meet their personal preference. Bixby users who are not registered on the My Starbucks Rewards™ program will be prompted to first enroll and then continue to place their order.”
