Nine Out of 10 UK Card Payments in 2020 Were Contactless

“Contactless payments accounted 88.6% of total card payments in 2020 as restrictions on contact-based payments drove people to the payment method, according to data from Barclaycard. Despite many shops closing for long periods during various lockdowns to reduce the spread of Covid-19, the total value of contactless payments increased by 7% in 2020 compared to 2019. For example, there was a 29% increase in the use of contactless in UK grocery stores.”

Standard Bank to support contactless payments in 15 African countries

Standard Bank is supporting the mass rollout of contactless cards across Africa as the financial services group reports an accelerated increase in the use of tap and pay across the continent.  Based in South Africa, the group is currently enabling contactless payment capabilities for customers in 15 African markets, including Botswana, Eswatini (Swaziland), Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.”

O-CITY enters Kenya to drive contactless payments across Matatu bus service

O-CITY , the automated fare collection provider by BPC, today announces its initiative to drive contactless payments across bus services in Nairobi, Kenya. The O-CITY pilot, designed to reduce the use of cash in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, was launched in partnership with transport savings and credit specialists, NikoDigi, and Kenyan payments firm, Tracom, to accelerate the deployment of cashless fare collection. Used by 70% of the population in Kenya, Matatu buses are a dominant transport mode across the country whereby passengers traditionally pay in cash. O-CITY’s automated fare collection platform leverages the M-Pesa mobile wallet, which is used by 90% of the population in Kenya.”

Mastercard enables Google Pay rollout across Europe

“Starting today, Mastercard will extend the Google Pay service to cardholders across Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Portugal, and Romania together with its issuing partners. With Google Pay, users with eligible Android devices will be able to make secure, fast and convenient purchases in stores and online. Furthermore, this will also give them the option to use their phones to make contactless payments.”

Waze rolls out contactless fuel payments with ExxonMobil, Shell

CNET

Waze on Thursday rolled out a new feature that allows US drivers to link the navigation platform to fuel partner apps for contactless payments at participating Exxon, Mobil and Shell gas stations.  When drivers arrive at those stations, a notification in the Waze app will prompt them to securely pay using the fuel partner’s contactless payment app (the Exxon Mobil Rewards app or the Shell app ). They’ll then be able to earn rewards through those loyalty programs. If a driver doesn’t have those apps installed, Waze will direct them to download it.”

Interac Sees Digital and Contactless Payment Rush As Consumers Hunker Down During Coronavirus Pandemic

“Canadian debit-payments firm Interac Corp. is experiencing a surge in digital and contactless transactions as consumers make purchases from home and try to keep their hands clean during the coronavirus pandemic. There were 51.9 million e-transfers sent through Interac in March, the first time the 50-million mark has been crossed in a month. “We’re conducting ongoing analysis into the impact of COVID-19 on how Canadians are using the Interac e-Transfer platform compared to regular state,” spokesperson Rebecca DeLuca said in an email. “While some Interac e-Transfer use cases will decrease during social distancing (splitting a dinner tab), we anticipate that others will rise or emerge, such as paying someone back for a grocery run.””

Merchants in Four European Countries to Pilot Dongle-free Contactless Payments on Android NFC Phones

Mastercard has partnered with software-only mPOS startup Phos and Paynetics , an e-money institution with an EU-wide licence which will act as the acquiring bank for the pilot. The 200 merchants taking part will be able to download the Phos app from the Google Play store and have their identity verified “in a fully digital due-diligence process which follows both anti money laundering as well as other locally applicable regulations”.”

AIB Customers to Be Charged for ‘Contactless’ Payments From May

“AIB customers will soon be charged 1c cent for ‘tap’ payments. From May 30, the bank is also introducing a quarterly maintenance fee of €4.50 for current accounts. It is the third bank to charge for contactless payments, following Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank. The fees could cost customers an extra €80 a year.”

“As part of the COVID-19 outbreak, central banks have resorted to quarantining physical bills and some are even going so far as to burn banknotes. South Korea’s central bank, the Bank of Korea, has implemented a quarantine policy for physical notes that come in from local banks. They’ll keep banknotes in a safe for up to two weeks, given “that the [SARS-CoV-2, which causes the COVID-19 disease] virus usually dies in nine days.””
