Dual-Interface Chip Card Sales Lift CPI Card Group

“As the payments industry reeled Monday morning during yet another wild session on Wall Street, card manufacturer CPI Card Group Inc. provided a glimmer of hopeful news when it reported improving financials thanks in part to growing sales of dual-interface cards. Littleton, Colo. based CPI said fourth-quarter sales in its U.S. credit and debit segment grew 24% year-over-year to $61.6 million. For all of 2019, segment sales grew 19% to $213.1 million.”

Contactless Payments Set to Triple to US $6tn by 2024

“Global contactless transaction values will reach nearly US$6tn in 2024, up from US$2tn today, Juniper Research forecasts. “This increase will be driven by significant growth in OEM Pay and contactless card transaction values, especially in the US,” the analysts say. Improvements in China’s contactless POS infrastructure will also be a key driver of the increase, along with “strong growth” from Apple Pay.”

Consumers Are Satisfied Making Contactless Payments, But Security Concerns Linger

“Even though contactless credit and debit card transactions made by tapping a card against a point-of-sale device rely on the same standard as EMV dipped transactions, consumers have different impressions of the security benefits, a newly released study says. Indeed, 81% of the 1,350 consumers surveyed for the “Emerging Trends at the Point of Sale” report released Monday by FreedomPay Inc. and Ingenico Group.  have an overall positive impression of contact EMV payments, compared to only 59% for contactless EMV payments. Arlington, Va.-based Hanover Research conducted the survey for the report. It also canvassed more than 350 merchants.”

New York Straphangers Give Contactless Payments a Boost

“The New York City area’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wednesday activated 96 contactless card readers in Manhattan’s Penn Station, one of the nation’s busiest transit hubs, in its quest to accept contactless payment cards and mobile-payment apps across its vast subway and bus system by the end of next year. The MTA also said it recently surpassed 4 million taps after beginning acceptance of contactless payments at limited locations in late May. By the end of this month, all MTA-operated buses on Staten Island, two Staten Island Railway stations, and 85 of the MTA’s 472 subway stations will have tap-and-go fare readers.”

With Momentum From Transit, Contactless Accounts for a Rising Share of Card Payments

US Payments Forum Provides Best Practices for In-store Contactless Acceptance in New Resource

MTA’s recent launch of OMNY ¹ and initiatives from several large financial institutions to offer contactless cards are evidence of the growth of contactless adoption in the U.S. As more opportunities arise to tap to make a payment, clear communication at the point of sale (POS) is needed to indicate that contactless cards and devices are accepted. Global Growth Leads to Nearly 41 Million Terminals Accepting Contactless, Researcher Says

“The number of point-of-sale terminals worldwide accepting contactless cards shot up 41% in 2017, the most recent year for which data was available, to reach 40.9 million, according to RBR Research, a London-based firm. That represents 42% of all payment terminals, the firm says.Rapid growth also is expected on the card-issuance side. The number of contactless cards globally will reach 10.7 billion, or 57% of all cards, by 2023, RBR forecasts. That contrasts with 5.25 billion cards in 2017, or 35% of all cards that year. That works out to a 12% average annual growth rate over the six-year span, RBR says.”

BofA Jumps on Tap-to-Pay Bandwagon as NYC’s Subway Moves Forward

Bank of America Corp. is joining the wave of companies issuing tap-to-pay cards.    The lender will send 4 million contactless cards this month to customers in New York, Boston and San Francisco who have Visa debit or credit cards, according to Mark Monaco, enterprise payments executive at Bank of America. It plans to measure usage in those markets before deciding on a broader rollout at the beginning of next year, he said.”

As U.S. Contactless Card Payments Ramp Up, Canada and the U.K. Point the Way to Mass Adoption

“Canada’s largest merchant acquirer, Toronto-based Moneris Solutions Corp., says that in the first quarter contactless for the first time accounted for more than half of card-present transactions—51.5%. Contactless payments grew nearly 25% year-over-year while overall credit and debit card spending rose only 2.5%, Moneris reported. Meanwhile, nearly one-third of all credit and debit card transactions in the U.K. in February were made using contactless cards, according to a new report from UK Finance Ltd., a London-based trade association of banks, other financial firms, and payment networks. There were 644 million contactless card transactions in February, up 20.6% from 534 million a year earlier.”

Nearly a Third of All Card Transactions in the UK Are Contactless

“Contactless card transactions in the UK were nearly a third of all volume in January 2019 according to new data from UK Finance. Over the month, there were 642 million contactless card transactions in the UK. This is a 19.5% increase from the same time in 2018, a total of 537 million. Furthermore, the value of these contactless transactions totalled £5.9bn ($7.7bn), an increase of 18.1% from January 2018. UK Finance also stated that there are 99 million debit cards in the UK currently, 83 million of which are contactless. Credit cards issued totalled 60 million and 41 million of them are contactless.”

Finnish Banks Double Contactless Transaction Limit to €50

“Customers in most Finnish banks can now use their bank cards to make contactless payments up to €50. The previous limit was €25. Banks that are introducing the new upper payment limit include OP, Nordea, Danske, S-Bank, Oma Säästöpankki, POP Bank, Handelsbanken and Savings Banks. Aktia and the Bank of Åland will introduce the new €50 limit later in the spring.”

Contactless Card Use Surges As Doubts Ease

NatWest Bank to Trial Contactless Biometric Card

NatWest Bank is to run a trial of fingerprint-on-card authentication allowing a cardholder to make contactless payments above the current level of £30. This increases security and makes it easier for customers when paying for goods or services since they will not need to enter a PIN, according to the UK bank. Some 200 customers are to take part in the upcoming test, which is being run in association with Visa, Mastercard and digital security company Gemalto.”
