Selfie Biometric Authentication Apps Rolled Out by India, New Zealand Governments

“It is now possible for Aadhaar digital ID account holders to verify their identity using their phone when accessing some services thanks to a mobile face biometric authentication app from the Unique Identification Authority of India. The face authentication platform, called Aadhaar FaceRD, means users do not necessarily need to carry their physical cards. Their identity can be verified using the FaceRD on their smart phones, writes Mint. The FaceRD app captures faces for authentication,” according to Mint. The app was developed by the ID authority.”

Payments Platform Stripe Launches Authentication Feature

“Stripe, a financial infrastructure platform for businesses, today announced the launch of a delegated authentication feature to improve payment conversion rates in Europe. Stripe businesses can now have their customers authenticate purchases right inside a checkout flow. Wise is the first card issuer to implement the feature. As a result, cardholders will no longer be redirected to their Wise app when authenticating purchases from millions of Stripe businesses. Instead, they will be able to use any biometric authentication method supported by the device they’re on, without ever leaving the checkout flow.”

Amazon One’s Palm-scanning Tech Makes First Move Into Entertainment Venues

“Amazon’s palm-scanning technology, Amazon One, has always been about more than just fast payments. Really, it’s about Amazon controlling and verifying identities, with the company hoping to deploy its service in public spaces like offices and stadiums. Today, Amazon announced the tech’s first launch in an entertainment venue as part of a partnership with ticketing firm AXS. Amazon One will be available to validate entry into Colorado’s famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre, an open-air venue built into a rocky outcrop. It’s the first time the technology has been deployed outside Amazon and Whole Food stores, and Amazon says it expects the tech will be added “to more AXS ticketed venues in the future.””

Amazon’s Palm Print Recognition Raises Concern Among U.S. Senators

“Three U.S. senators, including Democrat Amy Klobuchar who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee’s antitrust panel, wrote a letter to Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) to express concern about its palm print recognition system, Klobuchar’s office said Friday. Amazon began rolling out biometric technology at its Whole Foods stores around Seattle in April, letting shoppers pay for items with a scan of their palm. The system, called Amazon One, lets customers link a credit card to their palm print.”

‘Pay With a Glance’: Russia’s Sberbank Rolling Out Face-recognition Payments

“Russia’s biggest bank hopes shoppers will sign up for a facial recognition service that will let them pay for their groceries with just a glance. Sberbank is partnering with supermarket chain Magnit and plans to connect 100 stores in Moscow and Krasnodar to the service by June, the two companies said on Thursday. As banking margins shrink, Russia’s largest lender is expanding in areas ranging from food delivery and taxi services to cloud computing and cyber security.”

Amazon Is Bringing Palm-scanning Payment System to Whole Foods Stores

Amazon is expanding its palm-scanning payment system to a Whole Foods store in Seattle, the company announced Wednesday, the first of many planned rollouts at other locations. Amazon One , which debuted in September and is currently in use at about a dozen Amazon physical stores, allows shoppers to pay for items by placing their palm over a scanning device. The first time shoppers use the kiosk, they have to insert a credit card to link it with their palm print. But after that, shoppers can pay simply by holding their hand over the kiosk.”

Banks Work with Fintechs to Counter ‘Deepfake’ Fraud

“Banks and fintech groups are setting up partnerships to combat the use of doctored video and audio content by fraudsters, as research shows such ‘deepfake’ crimes are the biggest worry among customers. HSBC this week became the latest bank to sign up to a biometric identification system, developed by technology firm Mitek and offered through a partnership with Adobe. It will be introduced by HSBC’s US retail banking operation to check the identities of new customers, using live images and electronic signatures. Instagram Faces Lawsuit Over Illegal Harvesting of Biometrics

Facebook Inc. is facing new allegations that it illegally harvests the biometric data of users, this time in a lawsuit that targets the company’s photo-sharing app Instagram. Last month, the social media company offered to pay $650 million to settle a lawsuit in which it was accused of illegally collecting biometric data through a photo-tagging tool provided to Facebook users. In the new lawsuit, filed Monday in state court in Redwood City, California, the company is accused of collecting, storing and profiting from the biometric data of more than 100 million Instagram users, without their knowledge or consent.”

The tech giant is creating checkout terminals that could be placed in bricks-and-mortar stores and allow shoppers to link their card information to their hands, according to people familiar with the matter. They could then pay for purchases with their palms, without having to pull out a card or phone. The company plans to pitch the terminals to coffee shops, fast-food restaurants and other merchants that do lots of repeat business with their customers, according to some of the people. Amazon declined to comment.”

CULedger Completes Blockchain Identity Pilot With Three US Credit Unions

“CULedger claims that MyCUID users can verify their identity by using a biometric function on their smart phone, such as voice, fingerprint or facial recognition. The vendor says that data from its pilot indicated that the average time to verify a member’s identity had been reduced from the industry average of more than 50 seconds to ten or less. “As financial cooperatives, credit unions are more inclined to work together than their bank counterparts in order to best serve their members’ needs,” said John Ainsworth, president and CEO of CULedger.”
