UK Retail Spending Rebounds to Near Pre-lockdown Levels

“British retail sales jumped back almost to pre-coronavirus lockdown levels in June when non-essential stores in England reopened, giving a boost to beleaguered clothing stores. Sales volumes in June leapt by 13.9% from May, above all forecasts in a Reuters poll of economists. A 70% surge in clothing and footwear sales reversed much of their slump in recent months, though the sector remains one of the worst hit, with spending 35% below pre-pandemic levels.”

ALDI Nord Moves In-Store Acquiring in Germany to Fiserv

Fiserv, Inc., a leading global provider of payments and financial services technology solutions, today announced that ALDI Nord has selected Fiserv to enable all in-store card payments across its flagship German market. In the interest of its customers, ALDI Nord, a global leader in the food industry, decided at the end of June to transfer its entire in-store acquiring volume in Germany to a new provider on short notice. In just four days, ALDI Nord and Fiserv reached an agreement, and Fiserv began processing payments for more than 2,250 ALDI Nord locations in Germany within 12 hours of the agreement being signed. Payments are processed via TeleCash from First Data GmbH, now Fiserv.”

Merchant Transaction Volume Continues to Grow

“Shift4 Payments, the leader in integrated payment processing solutions, has revealed that merchant transaction volume continues to increase across the country despite surging cases of the novel coronavirus. In the third of a series of updates since the pandemic began to impact the United States, the data suggests that businesses are finding ways to drive sales even in the face of difficult economic and social conditions. Shift4’s transaction data, posted daily on www.Shift4Cares.com, indicate that 43 states are 10% or more above their transaction volumes from the last week in May, which were already significantly higher than the low point in late March.”

Visa Will Postpone Its Fuel-Pump EMV Liability Shift for Six Months, C-Store Group Says

“Visa Inc. has informed petroleum retailers that it will delay its planned EMV fuel-pump liability shift set for October until April 17, 2021, the convenience-store trade group NACS disclosed Friday. “The network’s delay was in response to letters NACS sent on behalf of its retail members to the four global networks requesting a delay of the October deadline, given the extreme disruption to the workforce and supply chain due to the coronavirus pandemic,” Alexandria, Va.-based NACS said in a news release.”

Amazon Will Launch New Grocery Store As Alternative to Whole Foods

Amazon on Monday said it plans to open its first new brand of grocery store in California next year, as it amps up its ambitious push to become a bigger name in food. “Amazon is opening a grocery store in Woodland Hills in 2020,” an Amazon spokesperson confirmed to CNET on Monday morning, soon after the company published four new jobs postings for the location. Woodland Hills is a neighborhood in Los Angeles.”

“U.S. merchants added 600,000 locations for EMV chip card acceptance in 2019’s first six months, and Visa issuers cranked out an additional 10 million EMV payment cards, according to new figures from Visa Inc. In its latest update on the U.S. conversion from magnetic-stripe payment cards to the EMV chip card standard, Visa reported Wednesday that 3.7 million U.S. locations in June accepted EMV cards, compared with 3.5 million in March and 3.1 million last December. Some 80% of storefronts now accept chip cards, up from 75% and 68% in March and December, respectively, according to Visa.”

Walmart Emphasizes Omnichannel With Canadian ‘Urban Superstore’

Walmart will update an existing Toronto location with a new “Urban Superstore Concept” designed to meet the needs of young city-dwelling families. The location will feature tighter e-Commerce integration, more in-store technology and an improved product assortment, among other enhancements. One of the store’s key features is Fast Lane checkout technology, which leverages the My Walmart app to let shoppers scan products on their own mobile devices as they shop. The order is automatically billed to a credit card on file, and the customer only needs to show the receipt to an associate to check out. Use of the Walmart app will be further encouraged through store-specific deals and free in-store WiFi and phone chargers.”
