Taiwan Bans Cryptocurrency Purchases with Credit Cards

“Taiwan’s financial regulator, the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC), is setting the ground to ban the use of credit cards for the purchase of digital currencies within its jurisdiction. As reported by Forkast, the regulator asked banks and credit card companies not to partner with cryptocurrency service providers as merchants. The FSC already issued a letter to the banking association earlier this month. The FSC highlighted that the usage of credit cards should be limited to consumption, rather than become a payment method for financial instruments and speculative trading.”

“Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC), has been seriously exploring the possibility of launching a central bank digital currency (CBDC). According to the country’s central bank governor, Yang Chin-long, Taiwan is now ready to enter the second stage of its CBDC study. In this second stage, the central bank’s efforts will be directed toward working on existing problems of the CBDC Chin-long shared while speaking at a forum on digital currencies, as reported by Bnext, a local news outlet.”

JPMorgan Testing Blockchain Solution With Taiwanese Banks

“JPMorgan launched a blockchain solution that aims to reduce the number of rejected or returned payments. The U.S. banking giant said Monday it is testing the solution “Confirm” with 12 banks in Taiwan including CTBC Bank, Taiwan Cooperative Bank and First Commercial Bank for money transfers to Indonesia using JPMorgan’s clearing solution “PayDirect.”The banks will be able to request and receive confirmation of beneficiaries’ account information in near-real time, according to JPMorgan’s announcement.”

“Discover Financial Services, a leading direct bank and payments services company, and National Credit Card Center of R.O.C. (NCCC), the domestic payment network in Taiwan, today signed an agreement to form a strategic network alliance and expand its existing acquiring relationship. Currently, Discover, Diners Club International, and network affiliate cards are accepted on the NCCC network in Taiwan. The new agreement will allow acceptance of NCCC Global Cards outside of Taiwan on the Discover Global Network.”
