FinovateFall 2011: Day Two / Session 3 of 4

Bryan Derman

September 21, 2011

Glenbrook’s Bryan Derman is live blogging from Finovate in New York City. This is only one of a series of posts featuring Bryan’s impressions as over sixty payments technology companies perform 7 minute demos (no PowerPoint slides allowed!) over two days. The index for Bryan’s Payments Views coverage is here.

PayNearMe

  • New uses cases for cash payments – auto loan payments and rent payments
  • PayMeNear allows auto dealers to sell cars to people who live remotely, since they don’t need to collect monthly cash payments in person.  The cash payments can be made at 7-11 stores and will be credited to the proper account via the PayNearMe card issued to the buyer
  • Similarly, rental tenants can conveniently pay their rent in cash at 7-11 using a PayNearMe card or its mobile app.  The landlord is saved the trouble of maintaining a payment office and protecting large amounts of cash that flow in on certain days of the month

CarryQuote

  • Securities research and market data on demand, particularly delivered via mobile (they support the CNBC Pro mobile service)
  • They distribute across all five major mobile platforms and can do push notifications to relevant audiences
  • Material from past and upcoming investment conferences can also be conveyed

FeeFighters

  • Website that merchants can use to solicit bids from multiple acquirers and have them compared
  • Now addressing the online gateway market with their Samurai product, which can establish a new online merchant account very rapidly
  • The gateway can also support the submission of different types of transactions to different acquirers (e.g., US processor, European processor, micro-payment specialist, etc.)
  • [Editorial Comment] Pretty interesting – this is really the promise of gateways, that is to make switching acquirers easy

Wall Street Survivor

  • Solutions to help everyday investors and help them speak more intelligently with their financial advisors
  • They define “missions” – tasks designed to teach a particular financial concepts — for beginning investors that are guided and “gamified” investment experiences

miiCard

  • A federated identity solution (mii = my Internet identity) that assures others online that you are who you claim to be
  • Their registration process leverages existing logins to financial accounts
  • The digital identity can then be displayed on other websites, from eBay to banking sites selecting sophisticated products

DoughMain

  • Seeking to address the issues of family coordination with a connection to banking
  • They provide a series of productivity tools for families (calendars, budgets, chore tracking, etc.) including aggregated financial accounts
  • For the children in the family, the site provides a few different services based on age ranges with simple interfaces and various incentives to become educated in financial management and engage in desirable behaviors
  • Partner banks can be co-branded on the DoughMain service

Bundle.com

  • Helps users make better spending decisions by providing data
  • Bundle uses spending data to augment the various review sites – it plays the “left brain” to Yelp’s “right brained” approach
  • Allows the user to establish filters in a search, including whether a particular shop or restaurant is popular with people who have similar profiles to the user
  • Spending data can also provide evidence of repeat visit behavior, use by people of a certain, by people who live locally, etc.
