“Samsung’s NFC phone-based contactless payments acceptance service is now live in Canada and is to be introduced globally “starting in 2020”, the company has announced. The rollout of the new mPOS service follows the successful completion of a pilot in Canada that saw more than 10,000 merchants downloading a Samsung POS app that let them accept Visa , Mastercard and Interac contactless payments on their Samsung Android phone — with no dongles or other hardware add-ons required.”

“ToneTag’s technology involves transmitting data encrypted from one device to another using sound waves. It doesn’t require any particular hardware and can be done through smartphones, feature phones, PoS (Point of Sale) devices, EDC (Electronic Data Capture) devices and also by ToneTag’s retail pod, among others. One has to simply program a device with ToneTag’s software and the transactions are completed when the two devices are in close proximity to each other.”

“Fiserv Inc. unit First Data said it plans to introduce its SoftPOS technology — developed with Visa and Samsung Electronics — that allows smartphones and tablets to accept contactless payments without the addition of new hardware, according to a press release.  The SoftPOS will allow merchants to accept payments on the devices using near-field communication-enabled technology embedded inside wearables, smartphones, key fobs or other devices.”
