The latest issue of strategy+business explores the clash of personal ethics and professional demands for productivity and profitability.
As companies face increasing pressure to maximize shareholder value and worker productivity, more and more employees are finding themselves trapped between the demands of their job and their own personal ethics. Insights gleaned from interviews with 38 business leaders reveal that although some complained of gross ethical violations in the workplace, the majority grappled with subtle doubts about their employers' value systems. The study offers five strategies to help employees cope with, or change, their work environment and thus avoid disillusionment.
