Workshop on Web 2.0 Technologies For Financial Services

FaceBook? Twitter? Amazon Flexible Payments? Mint? Zong? Join me and Scott Loftesness of Glenbrook as we explore the world of Web 2.0 technologies and their impact on the payments industry in this one day workshop (morning plus optional afternoon sessions).

What is Web 2.0 and how is it relevant to financial services and payments? In this workshop, we’ll explore the technological and social trends that are driving Web 2.0 and how it is different from the ‘old’ internet. The demographic reach of Web 2.0 may surprise you – it’s not just kids! Consumer buying decisions and perception of major brands are being driven by social media’s influence.

After a number of tentative forays, financial institutions are starting to use Web 2.0 more confidently. But is it too late? A number of personal finance management success stories (Mint, Wasabe and a host of popular bloggers) have already gained traction at the expense of financial institutions. We’ll examine how payments are transacted in the emerging social economy, with a particular focus on P2P payments and lending, mobile payments, micropayments, etc. Which business models are gaining traction? What are the enabling technologies?

Finally, after a guided tour of the intersection of banking and the social web, we will close with suggestions on how you can get started. Our agenda so far (and we’re constantly updating it!):

  • The Old Web vs. Web 2.0
  • Key platforms: blogs, social networks, rich media, messaging, Twitter etc.
  • What's on the horizon (Adobe AIR/Microsoft Silverlight – Rich Internet Applications
  • Financial Services Case Studies
  • The mobile connection, iPhone banking apps
  • How this does/will connect to mobile payments

The workshop will consist of a morning of presentations, explaining key technology trends and showcasing leading payments companies that are implementing them.

An optional “brown bag” lunch, hosted by Glenbrook, follows the morning’s presentations. In the afternoon, two additional working sessions are open for participation to continue to explore topics – or companies – discussed during the morning.

Join us for this highly interactive and informal “immersion course” on new technologies that will change your industry!
